Step 1: Estimating the Necessary Dimensions

Screen Capture of Typical QuickTime Movie with Text Track. The video track of the movie that we will use in this exercise is 160 by 120 pixels. The text captions can appear above or below the video track. We need to determine the dimensions of the box that will contain the text captions. For example, do we want a single line of text, or five lines of text? For this exercise, we will use two lines of 10 point text.

a. Download a copy of the unedited Quicktime video. The movie has the following properties:

b. Open the movie in Quicktime Player.

c. Go to the "Movie" menu and select "Get Info".

d. From the pop up menus, select "Movie" and "Size". Note that the size of the movie is 160 x 120 pixels.

e. Estimate the size of the box needed to contain the text track. Since the sample movie is 160 pixels wide, 160 x 25 pixels should be sufficient for two lines of 10 pt type.
