Cultural Identity and Survival
Additional Resources

This section is intended to provide the educator with additional resources designed to extend the core curriculum.

Explore the On-line Image Collection

Have your students search through the Image Collection . What other images suggest that European American artists consider native people to be frozen in time?

Visit the Exhibition

The Santa Domingo olla (an olla is a large jar used by the Pueblo peoples in the southwestern United States to store food or water) is an important focus of the Powerful Images exhibition. When visiting the museum, take a close look at the vessel. Walk around it--look into and around it.

  • Are students surprised at its size?
  • Does it look as if it is old?
  • How do they know?
  • Does it look as if it has been used?
  • How do they know?
  • Does its size, shape, or decoration remind them of anything they have in their homes?
  • Do they have anything in their homes with the same function? (container or artwork)
  • Were they made by anyone in their own family?
  • Ask them to imagine the olla in their own home-what would it be like to use it every day?
