![]() John Mix Stanley (1814 - 1872) Stanley, following in the footsteps of Catlin, created an Indian Gallery comprised of portraits from his extensive travels in the West. This allegorical painting of the demise of the Indian race, created apart from his Gallery, drew upon the artist's knowledge of different Indian peoples. Stanley portrayed the remnants of diverse tribes pushed to the edge of the North American continent. 1857, oil on canvas
