Rebecca Wapass

Rebecca Wapass was born on March 24, 1982, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She was adopted at birth and lived with her family for a short time on the Thunderchild reserve. Growing up in the city gave her a sense of not belonging. Her mother taught her to fancy dance at the age of two, and her brother Harold was her role model as he coached her dancing.

Being a teenager these days is not easy, and youth struggle with their identity. Rebecca has found comfort and strength in her Native traditions and culture. Fancy dancing has strengthened her self-esteem, and this has carried over to other areas of her life. Rebecca believes education is very important and that young people should listen to their Elders as there is always something to learn.
