Sandy McCarthy

Sandy McCarthy is one of the only Native players with the National Hockey League (NHL). Inspired by his family, he has shown great determination to reach his goals. Raised outside his traditional Micmac culture in Barrie, Ontario, he began playing hockey when he was seventeen. He turned professional in the 1992-93 season playing for Salt Lake (IHL). He started playing with the Calgary Flames in 1993. Since that time, he has scored over fifteen goals for the team. He had to overcome some racism in the hockey world, but this made him even more ambitious. Sandy is very interested in supporting Native youth through participation in charities, such as a walkathon against drug and alcohol abuse, and an annual Native hockey school.

"Sandy McCarthy is a role model because he has worked hard to be where he is today, he has shown great strength and determination when he is on and off the ice. The thing that is good about him is that he is a native hockey player, and since there are so few of them, I think he has a lot to offer to other young hockey players and young Natives who may need some inspirational advice."
