Lucien Goulet

Police Constable, Calgary Police Service

"My background is part Iroquois, part Dene, part French and my family is from the Fort St. John area of British Columbia. As I was growing up, we lived off-reserve, near Quesnel, B.C. My role model was my mother, who was very involved in local politics. She showed me how important it was to get involved with the community.

"I've been on the Calgary force since 1992. Before that I was a police officer on a number of reserves in western Canada. I don't find police work to be dangerous -- mostly criminals are just trying to get away from you. It's interesting that whenever I arrest another Native person, their first question is, "Where are you from?" They are rarely angry that another Native is arresting them.

"Working with the police allows me to contribute to the community through group home visitations and participation in their functions. I feel that I am giving something back."
- Lucien Goulet

"I've always been impressed with Lucien's calm, quiet, and sincere manner. Police work seems to me to be a dangerous occupation, and I admire someone who will take those risks. It makes me proud to see a Native person in a police uniform -- someone who has accomplished his goals. Lucien is working against the common stereotype of Natives, and creating a very positive image for the non-Native community."
