Eanger Irving Couse (1866 - 1936) Couse's paintings celebrate Indian creativity through the representation of their artistic productions. The artist settled in Taos, New Mexico, which became a colony for white artists interested in depicting Indian life in the early twentieth century. Art critics often considered the Taos artists to be producers of truly American art, because their subject matter represented uniquely American subjects, the Native Americans.
