Elbridge Ayer Burbank (1858 - 1949) Burbank's Indian portraits were commissioned by the artist's uncle, Edward Ayer, president of the Field Museum, in Chicago, Illinois. The compiling of Indian likenesses was seen as part of a scientific investigation. Geronimo's fame was spread by the popular press, which avidly promoted stories of his resistance to capture. Geronimo continues to be one of the few Indian persons identifiable by white audiences.
