Painted Hide
Painted Hide
Cadzi Cody (1866-1912)
Aqui-dika (Shoshone), Wind River Reservation, Wyoming

From about 1885 to the early 1900s, Shoshone artist, Cosiogo, working under the name Cadzi Cody, produced nostalgic pre-reservation scenes of buffalo hunting, ceremonies, and other traditions. The painting on this hide tells the story of a mounted buffalo hunt, with the warriors in pursuit of the running buffalo. In the center, the artist added a tipi, and the center pole from the Sun Dance with dancers surrounding it.

Cadzi Cody sold his numerous hide paintings to tourists who visited the Wind River Reservation, and included scenes which interested his buyers - buffalo hunts, warfare, and ceremonies such as the Sun Dance. Although the hide paintings were produced for sale by Cadzi Cody, they also serve as historical documents of Shoshone cultural traditions.
